Born Francis Thomas Avallone in South Philadelphia, Avalon’s first single was “Cupid.” and his third release, “Dede Dinah,” hit the Top Ten. He had his first number one single in 1959 with “Venus.” In the same year, “Why” went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and has the distinction of being the last number one hit of the 1950s. Incredibly, Avalon had 31-charted Billboard U.S. singles from 1958 to late 1962, including “Just Ask Your Heart,” “I’ll Wait For You,” “Bobby Sox to Stockings” and “A Boy Without a Girl.”
In 1962 he teamed up with Annette Funicello and reinvented himself as a clean-cut, pretty-boy surfer in a wildly successful batch of Beach Party movies. As a symbol of his era, Avalon appeared in the 1950s-themed musical Grease in 1978, singing “Beauty School Drop-out.” In April of 2009, Avalon appeared as a guest on the hit television show, American Idol, singing the song “Venus.”
