Legendary Entertainer Bill Cosby Returns to Treasure Island May 25

Iconic funny man Bill Cosby, who has been making audiences laugh for decades with his keen insight into everyday existence, brings his signature comedy to the Treasure Island Theatre May 25 at 8 p.m.

Cosby has earned respect from critics and adoration from fans for his uncanny ability to connect with people through humor and providing insight into the role of parents, children, family members, men and women,. Without resorting to gimmickry or lowbrow humor, Cosby has been compared to such great American humorists as Charlie Chaplin, Will Rogers, W.C. Fields and Groucho Marx. A testament to his status in the world of comedy, Cosby has earned five Grammy Awards for best comedy album.

Known the world over for “The Cosby Show,” which ran from 1984 to 1992 on NBC, Cosby broke racial barriers and sent a powerful message to viewers – that the family unit and raising children matters most. The No. 1 rated sitcom earned six Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes and 10 People’s Choice Awards. It helped set the stage for Cosby’s career as an author, as his book “Fatherhood” remained at No. 1 for more than half of its 54 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List. Among Cosby’s other titles are “Time Flies,” “Love and Marriage,” “Come On People: On the Path from Victims to Victors” and “Friends of a Feather: One of Life’s Little Fables,” which was illustrated by his daughter.

A champion of youth, Cosby’s dedication to helping children realize their potential is evidenced through his Emmy Award-winning “Little Bill” animated series, which aired on Nickelodeon and CBS. Together with partners Tom Werner and Marcy Carsey, Cosby produced “A Different World” on NBC from 1987 to 1993. His other television and film credits include “Obkb,” “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids,” “The Cosby Mysteries,” “Man and Boy” and “Uptown Saturday Night,” where he starred alongside Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. He has written, produced and directed educational television shows and animated specials.

Few entertainers have achieved the legendary status of Cosby, who emerged from humble beginnings in a Philadelphia housing project. After returning from the Navy, Cosby went on to earn a degree at Temple University and later a master’s and doctoral degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts. As philanthropists, Cosby and wife Camille have made substantial gifts in support of education and to various social service and civil rights organizations. His lifelong contributions to American culture were recognized with a Kennedy Center Honor in 1998, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in July 2002, America’s highest civilian honor, and the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2009.

Grandma Lee Of ‘America’s Got Talent’ Fame Coming To The King’s Room On May 31

Grandma Lee will be doing her standup comedy at The King’s Room at 7 p.m. beginning on Thursday, May 31 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and ironically she turns 78 on the week that she opens.

Grandma Lee of America's Got Talent

She first played comedy in Las Vegas at the LOUIE ANDERSON THEATER at the Palace Station and now she’s back for a two-month engagement Thursdays through Sundays at 7 p.m.  She gained her fame on “America’s Got Talent” and has been the hottest senior citizen comic in America since then.

She was born Lee Strong on May 29, 1934 making her 77 years old. Her stage name is Grandma Lee to fit her persona. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK. She was married to a U.S. Marine, named Ben Strong, she reared four children. She was a newspaper reporter and a phone operator before she tried her hand at comedy.  Her husband died of cancer in 1995 and she attended a comedy workshop.

It was 2009, at age 75, when she appeared on “America’s Got Talent.”  Although she made it to the Top 10, she was in the bottom 5 and was eliminated from the competition. She told People Magazine, “My material is based on the truth. I go up there and wing it…but I had to clean up the show. I won’t say a cuss word or anything to jeopardize myself. I can do clean and edgy.”

At her Houston audition, one of her jokes was, “I’ve decided that when I die, I want to be cremated and have my ashes sprinkled over Krispy Kreme. That way I know my fat daughter-in-laws will come down and visit me a couple of times a week. With the positive feedback from the judges and a cheering audience encore, she had gained 90 seconds of fame instantly. The judges said that they loved her timing, the material was great and that it was an honor to have her on the show. Her sassy and quick-witted sense of humor has gained her notoriety. The material she had used included sexual innuendo, her family and the judges.

She will perform on Eddie Griffin’s days off at The King’s Room in their comedy club. Tickets are $72.60 for general admission, $95.10 for VIP and $182.05 for the show plus a meet –and-greet with Grandma Lee after the show. For show tickets call (702) 777-7776.
