BODIES… The Exhibition Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month With Special Locals Offer

Throughout the entire month of October, BODIES… The Exhibition offers pink-clad Nevada residents a complimentary audio tour with the purchase of admission to the Exhibition in an effort to educate and raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Whether it’s a pink shirt, pink tie or a pair of pink socks, the Exhibition wants to share what’s inside the miraculous body with the hope that guests walk away feeling empowered and motivated to create positive lifestyle changes that may save their life.

According to Susan G. Komen’s website, the following lifestyle factors affect breast cancer risk:

Among American women, an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2011.

Being overweight before menopause decreases a woman’s risk; however, after menopause the risk increases by 30 to 60 percent.

Research compiled from 53 different studies showed that for every one alcoholic drink consumed per day, the risk of breast cancer increased approximately seven percent. Women who have two to three drinks per day have a 20 percent greater risk.

As a whole, evidence shows that regular exercise appears to lower breast cancer risk by approximately 20 percent. Furthermore, regular exercise after diagnosis increases overall survival among breast cancer survivors. This may be due to the positive mood and improved physical condition and movement that regular exercise promotes, which can enhance quality of life.

Described as a ‘life-changing experience,’ BODIES…The Exhibition is one of the most fascinating and educational experiences in Las Vegas. The real human bodies have been meticulously dissected, preserved through an innovative process and respectfully presented, giving visitors the opportunity to view the beauty and complexity of their own organs and systems like never before. In addition to providing an up-close look inside our skeletal, muscular, respiratory and circulatory systems, the Exhibition encourages healthy lifestyle choices.  Authentic human specimens illustrate the damage caused to organs by drinking, smoking, over-eating and lack of exercise.

To receive a complimentary audio tour, guests must purchase tickets to the Exhibition, wear an outwardly visible piece of pink clothing and show their Nevada ID at the box office. Regularly priced tickets are $32 for adults, $30 for seniors, $24 for children 4 – 12 years of age and $29 for locals. The Exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with last admission at 9 p.m. It is recommended that children 12 and under are accompanied by a teacher or parent as an adult guide. For additional information or to reserve tickets by phone, call 800-557-7428 or 702-262-4400.

First Friday Las Vegas to continue in October under new ownership – Event owners to bring new energy to downtown arts, music and culture festival

As First Friday Las Vegas approaches its nine year anniversary, new ownership promises to take the outdoor festival to a new level. The monthly event, which has anchored the 18b Arts District in downtown Las Vegas, will continue on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, following its brief summer hiatus.

‘This event has been very positive for the city of Las Vegas and First Friday’s return in October is beyond exciting,’ said First Friday Las Vegas, LLC managing partner Joey Vanas. ‘We’re committed to a continuing investment in Downtown and to supporting the community that backs the growth of such a culturally-active, and historical, area of Las Vegas.’

The new ownership group, First Friday Las Vegas, LLC, includes Zappos.com executives Tony Hsieh, Fred Mossler and Steve Hill, as well as downtown developer Andrew Donner and Vanas. First Friday founder Cindy Funkhouser and Whirlygig Inc. will consult on the event for the next two months to ensure a smooth transition.

The city of Las Vegas has been a longtime partner with the private sector for First Friday. The outdoor event is anchored around Casino Center and Charleston Boulevard and over the years has expanded to different areas of downtown. The new owners will bring the necessary resources and infrastructure to help the event grow into a larger, more diverse destination festival.

‘I want to thank Cindy Funkhouser and Whirlygig for helping kick start the Arts District by creating our monthly First Friday,’ said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman. ‘What a sensational event that has now become a tradition and now taken on a life of its own.  It is enjoyed and attended by thousands. I am absolutely thrilled with this new partnership, which will infuse additional resources and new energy into this grand downtown festival.’

Councilman Bob Coffin, who represents this area of Ward 3, echoed the mayor’s sentiments, ‘I think this is a great idea to build on the success of First Friday and grow it into something even more extraordinary. My thanks to Cindy Funkhouser and the new team for making sure this wonderful event will continue.’
