Bellagio Las Vegas Gallery Of Fine Art Presents ‘Figuratively Speaking: A Survey Of The Human Form’

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art (BGFA) is pleased to announce the opening of “Figuratively Speaking: A Survey of the Human Form”. Organized in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), “Figuratively Speaking” presents figurative works by such artists as Pierre-August Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joseph Cornell, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Judith Shea, Bill Viola, Yoshitomo Nara, Vanessa Beecroft and many others.

This engaging survey features more than 30 paintings, photographs and sculpture along with video installations by 26 artists whose traditional and contemporary perspectives on figurative art helped to define the genre in the late 19th, 20th and early 21st centuries.

“For this exhibition we are pleased to share some of the best figurative artworks from the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, two widely respected institutions with whom we have successfully collaborated in the past,” said BGFA Director Tarissa Tiberti. “These pieces will be displayed alongside works from the MGM MIRAGE Fine Art Collection, some of which have never before been displayed in full public view including art by Renoir, Picasso, Edgar Degas and Fernand Leger.”

Different schools of modern and contemporary art fall under the heading of figurative art, from Renoir’s romantic Impressionistic portraits (“The Sweeper”) and Picasso’s distorted Cubist figures (“Woman with Beret”) to Keith Haring’s Pop Art drawings and Chuck Close’s contemporary grid-like paintings. Figurative works of art not only depict a real subject, but also reflect the religious, social, political and mythical beliefs of the times in which it was made.

Hugh M. Davies, The David C. Copley Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego said, “Many of these important works on loan from MCASD will be shown together for the first time, and all demonstrate the breadth and depth of the museum’s collection.” Davies continued, “Spanning more than three decades of figurative expression, these selected works – by such notable artists as Roy Lichtenstein, Bill Viola, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman, Tony Oursler and Barbara Kruger – use the figure in innovative ways, provoking the most varied of interpretations. Cultural values, generational ideals, personal experience, even the most literal and direct of references are conveyed in these figurative works.”

MFA Deputy Director Katie Getchell said, “The human figure is one of the most frequently depicted subjects in art, and through the expressive images highlighted in this survey, we see how modern and contemporary artists celebrate the vitality and individuality of their subjects. We are delighted to collaborate once again with BGFA and share paintings, drawings and photographs from our encyclopedic collection with new audiences.”

“Figuratively Speaking: A Survey of the Human Form” will be on view May 1, 2010 through January 9, 2011. Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art is open Sunday through Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last admissions are sold 30 minutes prior to closing.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for Nevada residents and seniors 65 and older, $10 for students, teachers and military with valid ID. Children 12 and younger are free. Tickets and information are available by calling (702) 693-7871 or (877) 957-9777, or online at www.bellagio.com or www.ticketmaster.com. Audio and docent tours are included in the price of admission. Located adjacent to the gallery, The Gallery Store offers a selection of prints, books, stationery and unique gifts.

It includes a limited-edition never-before-seen Led Zeppelin enlarged contact sheet which is a collaboration between HRH magazine and Neal Preston.

“Hard Rock encourages what this collection is all about,” said Neal Preston. “These photographs represent more than just a singer at a mic; there is an emotional connection that occurs when people view them. Classic rock has exploded in the past few years, and music photography is now recognized as a true art form. It is an honor to have my work displayed at the Hard Rock.”

A public reception will be held at SKYBAR from 9 to 11 pm on June 17. Signed and numbered limited-edition exhibition prints will be available for purchase at the Hard Rock Retail Store. Preston’s exhibit, will be on display inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino beginning June 18, following the unveiling event at SKYBAR.

In conjunction with the unveiling of the photo exhibit, HRH magazine hosts its summer issue release party. This special collectors’ edition features a 12-page spread of the artist’s photography including a first-person account story by Preston himself with an introduction by director and Oscar-winning screenwriter (and long-time friend of Preston’s) , Cameron Crowe. About Neal Preston: A life out of the ordinary, Neal Preston has spent the past four decades traveling the world photographing rock royalty. A body of work spanning almost 40 years, is regarded as one of the music industry’s most extensive and significant photo collections. While rock fans best know Preston as the legendary photographer who has toured the USA with Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, Billy Joel and countless others, his rock ‘n’ roll travels have also included touring Europe, Canada, Russia, Japan, China, South Africa and South America with a unlimited list of rock artists. Robert M. Knight, one of the most acclaimed photographers in rock n’ roll history is bringing his art to the Las Vegas Hilton to be both enjoyed and even purchased by visitors starting May 28th with a huge musical kick off event.

For more than four decades, Knight has captured iconic images of music legends including Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Carlos Santana, Van Halen and Jeff Beck. His images are quintessential pieces of pop-culture mythology.

Robert’s partner and wife Maryanne Bilham is an equally talented photographer whose work will also be on display and for sale at the Las Vegas Hilton along with the work of Jim Evans, who created a new style of art called the “icon narrative. Under the name “Rock Machine”, the three are combining a lifetime of music-based art and photography into re-imagining the experience of rock music.

Robert Knight has been called a “Rock Prophet,” a title given to him for his uncanny ability to find new talent. It’s what led to Knight being the subject of a soon-to-be-released movie, “Rock Prophecies” www.rockprophecies.com, which explores Robert’s amazing career and follows him on his quest to help the bands of today become the Rock legends of tomorrow.

His musical portraits and concert photography are also chronicled by Insight Editions’ lavish coffee table book, “Rock Gods” insighteditions.com/product_info.php.

The Contemporary Arts Center Presents Reign Of Glass By Artist Erin Stellmon

The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) is pleased to present Erin Stellmon’s Reign of Glass, the newest installation in the gallery’s rotating selection of exhibits beginning on June 3, 2010 through July 24, 2010.

“Erin Stellmon’s work has always been particularly relevant within the context of Las Vegas, as it emerges directly from our culture of neon signage, suburban landscapes, the history of the atomic test-site, implosions of classic landmark casinos and her most recent explorations into CityCenter”, said Wendy Kveck, Director of the CAC. “However, the iconography of her work carries not only historical weight, but also becomes symbolic of the broader psychic landscape, exploring American value systems and our notions of home, security and community. The CAC found her proposal compelling and thought provoking with the potential to engage the community in a meaningful dialogue about these very important issues.”

“Putting together thoughts and ideas about CityCenter has been nothing if not daunting”, said Erin Stellmon about the creation of this exhibit. “It is estimated to have cost over 11 billion dollars; as well as, 6 workers lives, but out of that overwhelming expense there is a want and a need for the outcome to be successful, similar to a long fought war. If I criticize, will I be rallying against the people that have those new 12,000 jobs it created? I certainly didn’t want that. If everything seems too big to fail, could it also in turn be too small to not be seen? Reign of Glass is about this process of breaking down these overwhelming issues of economy and greed into pieces for discussion on power and community. Size does matter, and we are bigger than we think.”

What: Reign of Glass, photo and mixed medium installation by artist Erin Stellmon. Stellmon plans to address issues within the largest privately funded construction project in US history, the MGM Mirage CityCenter. During the exhibition, Stellmon will feature an installation entitled “If you lived here you’d be home by now” which is a collective of drawings by artists and friends based on a personal memory of Las Vegas. Sales of these drawings will be either donated to the CAC or returned to the artist based on their preference.

Who: Erin Stellmon is a visual artist that employs multiple mediums in her work including collage, photography, drawing and sculpture. Her featured work deals with themes of shelter and transition through images of decay, construction and technology. She is interested in exploring how we are affected by the economic and emotional structures of comfort and the efforts we are willing to go through to feel that we have finally come, or are going, to that place called home.

Where: Contemporary Arts Center, 107 East Charleston Boulevard, Suite 120, Las Vegas, NV 89104

East Side Projects Continues With New Showcase Installation “Ultimately” Through May 29, 2010

The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) is pleased to announce the next artists’ project for East Side Projects, the monthly two-week installation in the gallery’s front window space facing Charleston Boulevard. The non-profit arts organization’s call honors Pride 2010 and selected “Ultimately” by Wes Fanelli and Nico Holmes-Gull to be the second in the series of installations.

What: “Ultimately” the closet is a common utility, the most private and secluded section in a bedroom whose primary function is to store, behind closed doors, all that will be displayed publicly.

The text from this work comes from a collection of Ernest Hemingway’s poetry, illustrating a graphic image of one who could no longer withhold the truth. The text is then juxtaposed with an image of a glory hole, utilized for anonymous sexual encounters, lovingly framed and displayed on a bedside table. Ten pairs of shoes are neatly organized along the bottom, illustrating the functional nature of the closet while recalling cues for bathroom cruising. Each pair of shoes represents an anti-gay activist that has been caught in the act of homosexual conduct.

As queer individuals choose to either publicly express their private lives, or to instead subscribe to an opposing persona, their lives become just as mysterious as the closet itself. This installation is meant to provoke thought not only within one’s personal life, but also in a political context.

Who: Wes Fanelli and Nico Holmes-Gull, artists

Where: Contemporary Arts Center, 107 East Charleston Blvd., Suite 120, Las Vegas, NV 89104

When: May 15, 2010 to May 29, 2010

TRIFECTA Gallery- Introducing Leonardo Aguirre di Matteo ‘En Escena’, Educated in Montevideo Uruguay as an architect Leo changed his tune to painting. Architectural references are made and one would think the artist also studied theatrics. The well drawn paintings take on a surreal stage presence but with an extremely compressed depth of field. The fun begins when you start following lines that lead to trap doors, wrap around pinball bumpers and dangle heavy objects from what appears to be simply a line- not a cable, and sometimes a dotted line. You begin to doubt your sense of weight, space and even time by the clever choice of totally unrelated objects drawn into his scenes. “Docent tours at BGFA are designed to enlighten and enrich the gallery experience for our guests,” said BGFA Director Tarissa Tiberti. “Our program provides participants with the ideal setting in which to expand their awareness of art, artists and art techniques.”

BGFA is currently showcasing 12 + 7: Artists and Architects of CityCenter through April 4. The exhibit features sculpture, drawings, paintings and models by 12 of the contemporary art stars and seven of the master architects whose work revolutionized the Las Vegas landscape when CityCenter debuted December 2009.

BGFA is open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last admissions are sold 30 minutes prior to closing.

Admittance is $15 for general admission, $12 for Nevada residents and seniors 65 and older, $10 for students, teachers and military with valid ID. Children 12 and younger are free. Tickets and information are available by calling (702) 693-7871 or (877) 957-9777
