“Art & Wine: A Perfect Pairing” At Bellagio Gallery Of Fine Art On Wednesday, Feb. 9

WHAT: Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art (BGFA) brings together the world of art and wine with “Art & Wine: A Perfect Pairing,” featured on the second Wednesday of each month. The event pairs wines from Bellagio’s cellar with artwork featured in the gallery’s current exhibition, “Figuratively Speaking: A Survey of the Human Form.” A highlight of the program is an interactive conversation of wine and art that blends the expertise of Jason Smith, Bellagio’s Director of Wine and one of the hotel’s four Master Sommeliers, with the knowledge of Tarissa Tiberti, BGFA Director. Depending on the art, liberties may be taken matching spirits from champagne to tequila, to possibly beer, given the inspiration. For this event, one of the selected pairings will be Nick Cave’s Soundsuit coupled with a Banfi Brachetto d’Acqui “Rosa Regale” Piedmont 2009.

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 9
5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas Celebrate Chinese New Year 2011 -Festive decor and traditional dragon dance honors Year of the Rabbit

The Venetian and The Palazzo will ring in the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rabbit with an authentic dragon dance with firecrackers and festive decorations featuring a 16-foot, 1,000-pound animated rabbit in the atrium gardens of The Shoppes at The Palazzo with handcrafted silk hanging lanterns and orange trees representing good luck and fortune.

Dragon Dance

Symbolizing good luck and prosperity for the upcoming year, the dragon dance is an important ritual of Chinese culture. The Chinese consider dragons to be friendly and helpful creatures associated with strength, good fortune, wisdom and longevity.

On Thursday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m., a ceremonial dragon dance complete with firecrackers and eye painting ceremony will begin at The Venetian porte cochere, making its way through The Venetian Casino past The Palazzo Waterfall Atrium and through The Palazzo Casino, ending in the upper Palazzo porte cochere. The colorful spectacle will feature a parade of dancers and musicians dressed in elaborate costumes playing authentic music.

Chinese New Year Décor

Decorations in the customary color scheme of red and gold will transform both properties into a festive and bright celebration of the New Year.

Both The Venetian and The Palazzo entrances will be adorned with fresh bamboo, traditional Chinese lanterns and I-Ching coins representing an abundance of wealth.  The Palazzo front desk will have a 15-foot floral arrangement of oranges, bromeliads, bamboo and orchids.  The Palazzo Lalique fountain garden will feature a formal garden of orchids, chrysanthemums, fresh bamboo, 15-foot bamboo trees and citrus trees.

A 16-foot, 1,000-pound animated rabbit, the zodiac animal for 2011, will be situated in the atrium ground fountain. The rabbit took a team of 35 artists more than four months to conceptualize and build the one-of-a-kind piece.

Six-foot-tall, hand-loomed brocade silk and jade gold and red lanterns suspended from the ceiling will signify the lives of those around to always be bright.  Red lacquer bridges, bromeliads, orchids, kalanchoes, chrysanthemums, 15-foot bamboo trees and fresh-cut bamboo, citrus trees and I-Ching coins will accent the atrium gardens.  Red lacquer bamboo columns with yellow cymbidium orchids, oranges, bromeliads, lucky knots and I-Ching coins will be located on the waterfall wall.

Chinese New Year decorations will stay up through February.

Restaurant Specials

From Feb. 2-8, TAO Asian Bistro at The Venetian will offer a special meal of bo bo go sing, a rice cake stir fry with shrimp, cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, carrot, ginger, scallion, sambal chile and soy. Meaning “each step go higher,” this dish represents bringing personal and professional success into the household for the new year. TAO Asian Bistro will also offer a dessert special featuring fried sesame balls made of sweet potato powder, water, sugar, sesame seeds with a sweet adzuki bean filling. Four pieces are served in a bamboo basket, representing good fortune for the New Year and wishing that money will “roll into your house.”

Double Helix Wine & Whiskey Bar at The Palazzo will offer half off all sake and sake cocktails on Feb. 3.

ZINE at The Palazzo will also offer a special menu to commemorate the Chinese New Year.

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art (BGFA) is pleased to announce the extension of its current exhibition, “Figuratively Speaking: A Survey of the Human Form,” through March 27, 2011. Organized in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), “Figuratively Speaking” has received rave reviews from critics and patrons alike since opening in May 2010.

With artworks culled from MCASD and MFA’s permanent collections, alongside works from MGM Resorts International’s Fine Art Collection, “Figuratively Speaking” showcases a wide range of figurative styles in a variety of media by artists whose unique perspectives have defined the genre. Although different schools of art fall under the heading of Figurative, from the Cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso and the Surrealist sculptures of Alberto Giacometti to the Pop Art collages of Keith Haring and the Photorealistic portraits of Chuck Close, all of the figurative works of art on display use the human form in innovative ways, provoking the most varied of interpretations.

“We’ve had record visitor numbers since “Figuratively Speaking” opened, including more than 1,600 guests on our first ever National Museum Day during which gallery patrons enjoyed free admission to BGFA,” says BGFA Director Tarissa Tiberti. “The response has been so great that we wanted to ensure that everyone had a chance to see this particular collection of works, most of which are being shown together for the first time.”

Following the extended run of “Figuratively Speaking” will be “A Sense of Place: Landscapes From Monet to Hockney,” which will encompass a wide range of landscape styles. “A Sense of Place” will open April 16, 2011 and will feature works by well known and highly celebrated artists including Claude Monet, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Helen Frankenthaler and Sylvia Mangold among others.

Bellagio Las Vegas Gallery Of Fine Art Presents ‘Figuratively Speaking: A Survey Of The Human Form’

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art (BGFA) is pleased to announce the opening of “Figuratively Speaking: A Survey of the Human Form”. Organized in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), “Figuratively Speaking” presents figurative works by such artists as Pierre-August Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joseph Cornell, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Judith Shea, Bill Viola, Yoshitomo Nara, Vanessa Beecroft and many others.

This engaging survey features more than 30 paintings, photographs and sculpture along with video installations by 26 artists whose traditional and contemporary perspectives on figurative art helped to define the genre in the late 19th, 20th and early 21st centuries.

“For this exhibition we are pleased to share some of the best figurative artworks from the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, two widely respected institutions with whom we have successfully collaborated in the past,” said BGFA Director Tarissa Tiberti. “These pieces will be displayed alongside works from the MGM MIRAGE Fine Art Collection, some of which have never before been displayed in full public view including art by Renoir, Picasso, Edgar Degas and Fernand Leger.”

Different schools of modern and contemporary art fall under the heading of figurative art, from Renoir’s romantic Impressionistic portraits (“The Sweeper”) and Picasso’s distorted Cubist figures (“Woman with Beret”) to Keith Haring’s Pop Art drawings and Chuck Close’s contemporary grid-like paintings. Figurative works of art not only depict a real subject, but also reflect the religious, social, political and mythical beliefs of the times in which it was made.

Hugh M. Davies, The David C. Copley Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego said, “Many of these important works on loan from MCASD will be shown together for the first time, and all demonstrate the breadth and depth of the museum’s collection.” Davies continued, “Spanning more than three decades of figurative expression, these selected works – by such notable artists as Roy Lichtenstein, Bill Viola, Keith Haring, Cindy Sherman, Tony Oursler and Barbara Kruger – use the figure in innovative ways, provoking the most varied of interpretations. Cultural values, generational ideals, personal experience, even the most literal and direct of references are conveyed in these figurative works.”

MFA Deputy Director Katie Getchell said, “The human figure is one of the most frequently depicted subjects in art, and through the expressive images highlighted in this survey, we see how modern and contemporary artists celebrate the vitality and individuality of their subjects. We are delighted to collaborate once again with BGFA and share paintings, drawings and photographs from our encyclopedic collection with new audiences.”
