The Colosseum At Caesars Palace Named ‘Venue of the Decade: 2000-2009′ By Billboard Magazine

The Colosseum at Caesars Palace was recognized as Billboard magazine’s ‘Venue of the Decade: 2000-2009′ in the category of venues with a capacity of 5,000 or less.

“The Colosseum is far and away the busiest venue in its category (capacity of 5000 or less) for the decade,” said John Nelson vice president of AEG Live Las Vegas. “In fact, The Colosseum grossed as much as the number 2, 3, 4 and 5 venues combined, and we didn’t even open for business until March of 2003. It’s an amazing accomplishment, and is entirely due to the dedication and hard work of our resident artists: Celine Dion, Elton John, Jerry Seinfeld, Bette Midler and Cher.”

The award was ranked by gross sales compiled from box office scores from December 1999 through November 2009. The complete list can be found in the Billboard’s recent “Decade in Music” special issue.

“Frankly, the idea of building The Colosseum, with 4,300 seats, studio-quality sound and bigger-than-life visuals, and the plan to bring back world-class headliners to Las Vegas as resident artists was met initially with considerable skepticism,” said Gary Selesner, president of the famed resort. “Thanks to the vision of Celine’s husband Rene Angelil, great performers like Celine, then Elton, Jerry, Bette and Cher, our partners at AEG Live, and all the great team members who work in The Colosseum, this wild idea has brought incomparable joy to millions of our guests and changed the face of entertainment in Las Vegas.”

In building its reputation as the home to the greatest entertainers in the world, the Colosseum has hosted not only the long-running resident productions Celine Dion A New Day…, Elton John Red Piano, Cher, and Bette Midler The Showgirl Must Go On, but other luminaries include Luciano Pavarotti, Gloria Estefan, Mariah Carey, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, Chris Rock and Luis Miguel.
