Gladys Knight Returns To The Orleans Showroom August 7-9

The legendary “Empress of Soul,” Gladys Knight has had a deep influence on the music world throughout her five-decade career. From August 7-9, Knight will be bringing her one-of-a-kind performance to The Orleans Showroom.

Gladys Knight made her solo singing debut at the age of four in a Baptist church in Atlanta. In 1952, shortly after winning a prize for her performance on the televised Ted Mack Amateur Hour, eight-year old Gladys formed The Pips with her brother, sister and two cousins. With young Gladys supplying the throaty vocals and The Pips providing impressive harmonies and graceful choreography, the group went on to achieve icon status, recording some of the most memorable songs of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

Top 20 hits like “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “If I Were Your Woman,” set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-’70s. Top 10 gold-certified singles such as “Neither One of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Good-bye),” “I Have Got to Use My Imagination,” “Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me” and the No. 1 smash-hit “Midnight Train to Georgia” established Gladys Knight and The Pips as the premier pop/R&B vocal ensemble in the world.

Recording nine solo albums over the years, and teaming with such artists as Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Rogers and Patti LaBelle, Knight has topped the charts and enjoyed numerous No. 1 hits. In addition to her vocal talent, Knight’s involvement in other creative undertakings, business adventures and humanitarian activities has been extensive and has brought her widespread honors and acclimation.

In 1986, she produced and starred in the Cable Ace Award-winning Sisters in the Name of Love, an HBO special co-starring Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle. Knight recorded the title theme for the James Bond movie License to Kill in the late ’80s. In 1999, she completed a starring run on Broadway in the small musical hit Smokey Joe’s Café. Knight also managed to find time to publish her autobiography entitled, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory.

Showtime is 8 p.m.

Imelda Papin To Co-headline With Melissa Manchester In A Limited Engagement At The Orleans Showroom

International singing sensation Imelda Papin is co-headlining three nights of concerts at The Orleans Showroom with legendary recording artist Melissa Manchester. The engagement will run Friday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m.

Audiences will revel as the two singers each put on a dynamic performance. Papin is set to get each night going with an astounding performance combining her hits throughout the years. Each night will feature a duet performance by Manchester and Papin in addition to the two singers’ solo performances.

Papin got her start in a remote fishing village in the Philippines. Upon winning a regional singing contest, her family uprooted and moved to the island’s capital Manila where Papin would have a greater chance of gaining the fame that was within her. Papin began performing in small clubs, cocktail lounges and established performance venues. Her career quickly elevated and she moved to Hong Kong and Bangkok where she made frequent appearances on multiple television programs.

Throughout the course of her career, Papin released multiple hit songs, including “Bakit,” “Isang Lingong Pagibig,” “I Love You” and “Voice of the Heart,” and sold millions of records and received numerous awards. Papin starred in several films and was the first Filipino artist to host a three-hour telethon on LA18 KSCI-TV, the largest Asian Language TV Station in the U.S. She is the current host of “Imelda Papin in America,” which airs every second Saturday of the month at 4 p.m. on LA18 and also hosts the “Imelda Papin Show” on KLAV 1230 AM in Las Vegas every Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Most recently, Papin released the album Voice of the Heart with 618 International Records distributed by Warner Music Group (ADA), which features the songs “Voice of the Heart” and “Dance with My Daughter,” (female version as bonus cut) and another CD to be released soon in the Philippines featuring “Sugar…Sugar,” a dance version duet with Ron Dante of the Archies.

Papin has always held a love for humanity and the Philippines. In the late ’90s, she served as the first female Vice-Governor for the province of Camarines Sur and was later reelected. Since then, she focuses on the Imelda A. Papin (IAP) Foundation of which she donates a portion of her concert and record proceeds to support Filipinos in need. Recently, Papin held a fundraising concert with boxing champ Manny Pacquiao for the purchase of dialysis machines for the free treatment of indigent patients in the Philippines.

Tickets to see Imelda Papin and Melissa Manchester are on sale now for $60 including tax and are available by calling The Orleans Box Office at 702.365.7075 or visiting www.orleanscasino.com

“Cowboys For Cancer” Concert Raises More Than $7,000 To Benefit The Caring Place And Vance Davenport

“Cowboys for Cancer,” held on Sunday, June 28 at Club Madrid inside Sunset Station Hotel & Casino, was a success, raising more than $7,000 in donations. The benefit concert was held in an effort to raise funds for cancer survivors and bring awareness to rehabilitation and wellness programs, with the event’s proceeds benefiting Vance Davenport and The Caring Place.

Vance Davenport, a former Las Vegas resident, recently survived an arduous battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC). Davenport performed in and later became Musical Director of the Aladdin’s “Country Tonight” show before he moved to Nashville, performing and touring with such artists as Mark Chesnutt, Sara Evans, George Jones, Lone Star, Toby Keith, Ricochet and Trent Willmon. Vance’s brother, Las Vegas resident JR Davenport, singer and lead guitarist of WolfCreek, created the benefit not only to honor and assist his brother, but also to support those surviving and living with this debilitating disease.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for their overwhelming support and tireless efforts in making our event such a tremendous success, from Station Casino’s generous donation of Club Madrid, to the local businesses who donated raffle items, to the media who helped us spread the word,” said event coordinator JR Davenport. “I feel so blessed to have been able to make a difference, not only in my brother’s remission, but in so many others’ lives affected by this disease in our community. We definitely plan to do it all again next year.”

Lending their time and talent in support of “Cowboys for Cancer” were: Scotty Alexander, The Randy Anderson Band, Desert Outlaws, John Encinio, Lefty Lucy Band, comedienne Pam Matteson, Tony Marques, Mark O’ Toole, Third Town and WolfCreek. Matteson and O’Toole, both cancer survivors, inspired and moved the audience when sharing their personal experiences of struggle and survival. The event also featured a silent auction with autographed guitars and fiddles from such country superstars as Clint Black, Larry Gatlin, Alison Krauss, Tracy Lawrence and Loretta Lynn, among others.

“We’re delighted to be a part of this event. We applaud JR for all that he did, and these kind of events represent the best of the Las Vegas community,” said Connie Bernstein, Chair, The Caring Place, Chair. “The Caring Place will make good use out of the proceeds we are given and continue to provide free services to those touched by cancer.”

The highlight of the evening was when Austin Davenport, Vance’s 7-year-old son, joined his father and WolfCreek on stage to perform his rendition of Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee” to a standing ovation.
